Why is Google forcing us to have SSL certificates on our websites?

If you don’t already have an SSL Certificate, Google is going to flag your website this year which will raise security concerns from users.

Why is Google forcing us to have SSL certificates on our websites?

We turn to the internet for everything. From selling to buying, we live in an internet world. (even my kids refuse to go on holiday unless ‘do they have internet? They don’t really care if it is free because poor old Dad is paying for it.). With this dominating trend, online security has become a necessity.

Undoubtedly, Google loves its users and therefore, is coming up with every possible way to make us feel secure here on the internet. With its recent announcement, earlier this year, Google will flag all the unencrypted internet from now on. This actually means 2/3 of the web currently will be flagged as unsafe. This is especially important for hotel websites as they have multiple input text fields for enquiries, bookings, and newsletter subscriptions.

What is SSL Certification? And How does it work?

Think of it as an electronic passport, like visitors entering and leaving your website with a secure passport.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral.

The information you send on the Internet is passed from computer to computer to get to the destination server. Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted. When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to.

It is impossible to escape the rising tide of cybercrime if your website doesn’t have an SSL certificate. They will identify weakness(es) in your network…mostly, when information is transmitted. Recently, the ‘bad guys’ have been refining malicious strains that are specifically designed to capture data while moving between destinations.

The biggest reason for hotel websites to be secure for the end users is to build Trust & Brand Power.

With SSL certificates, your customers will see visuals like lock icon and green address bar that indicates well-trusted encryption is in use. Well, if I as a customer will see that on your website, I will be assured that my information is traveling safe.

Our CMS server has added a special new advanced hosting package that includes SSL certification making this easy for all existing websites to simply upgrade with the new secure technology.
